First presented in 1992, the Ibby Phelan Memorial Award was created in memory of Mrs. John D. "Ibby" Phelan.
Although Ibby was not a CPCU, she made a lasting contribution to the CPCU Society through her dedication to the CPCU movement, and through her efforts to promote the CPCU spirit. Ibby was the wife of John D. Phelan, CPCU, CLU, national Society president in 1977, and chairman of the CPCU - Loman Education Foundation from 1983 to 1988. Both Phelans played crucial roles in the CPCU Society as it grew from a fledgling group of insuance professionals to the thriving organization it is today.
Friends described Ibby Phelan as a woman with many special qualities -- ones that enabled her to make a unique contribution to the CPCU movement. She is remembered for an ability to get people to work together, a generosity of spirit, a sense of how to put things right, and a gift for making people comfortable. Ibby was a woman who volunteered without being asked when she saw that something needed to be done.
The Ibby Philan Award is given to honor a woman who exemplifies caring, outreach, involvement, and concern for others. The award expresses the deep admiration and appreciation of the Loman Foundation for the quality of the recipients' lives and their contributions.
